Iyengar Yoga: Cairns

Understanding the principles of Iyengar Yoga

Precision and alignment: Precision is in the correct placement of the different body parts and in the detail of the instructions. Alignment is of bones and joints, muscles and tendons; nothing poking in nor poking out, so that left and right sides and front and back of the body all align. Correct alignment ensures correct movement. Practicing correctly brings an ‘inner feeling’ of stability and balance. This is the alignment we look for.

Timing includes going into, staying and coming out of the posture. Initially you use will power, which is essential for a beginner. However, as your practice matures you need to consider conserving enough energy to be able to thoughtfully come out of the posture as well

.

Sequencing: A sequence can be for the purpose of practice; determined by the weather; the time of day; the health status of the practitioner or the level of practice. There are many different combinations. However, shoulder stand is never practiced before headstand and practice generally ends with Savasana.

.

Props: can be used as a support when there are problems. For example: The use of a brick to support the back of the chest, to help breathing; a belt to help raise a leg. If there is fear, the use of a wall gives confidence. Props can also bring physical and mental stability to those practicing the more difficult asanas. Props are used to get the pose to work.
